High performance rubber compounds are specially formulated to provide superior physical and chemical properties compared to general rubber compounds. High performance compounds have great physical properties and processability. Some of the key features of high performance compounds include:
There are several types of high performance compounds based on FKM, FFKM, HNBR, VMQ, and FVMQ as well as all other polymers. Each compound has its own unique properties and advantages:
Fluoroelastomers, which are sometimes referred to as FPM or fluor rubber, are a class of elastomers renowned for their ability to withstand a diverse range of chemicals. They also have exceptional high temperature performance. FKM or FPM compounds are commonly used in automotive and aerospace applications.
This is a perfluoroelastomer compound that offers even higher chemical resistance than FKM and FPM. Also, FFKM offers a greater degree of versatility than FKM. FFKM compounds are used in applications where the most aggressive chemicals are present. FFKM compounds can also withstand a greater range of operating temperatures.
Hydrogenated Nitrile Butadiene Rubber (HNBR) is a type of elastomer with exceptional resistance to chemicals and oils and mechanical properties. HNBR has excellent resistance to petroleum-based oils and fuels, as well as many industrial chemicals. These compounds are frequently used in the automotive industry.
FVMQ is a fluorosilicone compound that offers good high and low-temperature resistance. They have a moderate resistance to fuels and oils but they still have better resistance to fuel and oil than standard silicones. Also, compared to fluorocarbon rubbers, fluorosilicones offer a significantly broader range of operating temperatures. FVMQ compounds are commonly used in aerospace and electrical applications.
VMQ compounds offer exceptional resistance to aging, oxygen, ozone, and UV radiation. And it also has an extensive range of operating temperatures. VMQ compounds offer excellent dielectric and anti-adhesive properties, as well as a low toxicity, which makes them suitable for use in various medical and food-related applications.
High performance compounds are used in a variety of applications across different industries, including automotive, aerospace, chemical processing, and oil and gas.
In the automotive industry high performance compounds are used to make components such as gaskets, seals, and O-rings that need to withstand high temperatures and pressure. The resistance to oil, fuel, and other chemicals is evidently the most crucial feature. We have obtained TS 16949 certification to serve our customers in this segment.
High performance compounds in the aerospace industry are used to make parts for aircraft and spacecraft that must be able to withstand extreme temperatures, pressures, and vibrations. These materials must also meet strict safety and quality standards and be able to withstand exposure to harsh chemicals, UV radiation, and other environmental factors. Aerospace and defense compounds must comply with the strictest requirements, and some of our compounds have been approved by the U.S. Department of Defense.
In the chemical processing industry, high performance compounds are used to make components such as gaskets, seals, and valves that must be able to withstand exposure to chemicals, high pressures, and temperatures. Polycomp creates and supplies high-quality compounds, including FFKM, for crucial applications in this sector. Our customers are global high-tech companies, and their products have diverse applications.
In the oil and gas industry these compounds are used to make components such as seals, gaskets, and O-rings. They must be able to withstand exposure to extreme temperatures, pressure, and harsh chemicals and meet international standards such as NORSOK, TOTAL and NACE. Polycomp provides a selection of compounds based on different types of HNBR, FKM, and FFKM that comply with requirements such as Norsok M-710 and/or ISO 23936-2. Additionally, we can also offer solutions in FVMQ or NBR for specific applications.
High performance compounds, specifically FKM, FFKM, and VMQ compounds, are utilized in the food and pharmaceutical industries due to their exceptional chemical and thermal properties. These compounds are designed to meet regulatory standards including the requirements of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA, CFR 21 177.2600), United States Pharmacopeia โ Class VI (USP Class VI), and 3-A Sanitary Standards.
